ZEDWILLDO, the 6yo Gelding by Zed out of Katie Spice proved that distance was his friend when winning the Maiden 2460 meter event at Mornington on Friday, the 6th of June December in the hands of Will Gordon. Trained by Brett Scott at Mornington “Des” had indicated with close-up second and third placings in recent starts that he was knocking on the door of win, but then unfortunately was ridden upside down at Geelong 27th November when stepping up to the 2400 meter trip for the first time and weakened into 6th placing closing stages. This time however, new rider Will Gordon executed pre race instructions perfecly, settling “Des” at the back of the field and riding him cold in a race which was run at quick tempo. At the 900m mark, sensing that the pace had slackened, Will urged ZEDWILLDO forward and eliciting a good response from the horse, he soon had him eyeballing the race favourite, Najle and the two of them knuckled down to a 2 horse war down the length of the straight, with ZEDWILLDO going to the line the stronger in a time 0f 2.36.26 and a half head margin.
Trainer Brett Scott was on course and was a happy trainer after the race – “That was good strong staying perfomance – this horse will stay all day but needs to be switched off early and ridden cold and that is what Will delivered today. Congrats to all of his Ownership Team, particularly John Galvin and his Fortuna Racing ownership group – this is the first horse we have trained for them and its great to get the win after running some nice placings recently”
