This lovely Filly was acquired by Fortuna Racing and David Ellis at the 2024 NZ Bloodstock Karaka Yearling sale – this after David, in conjunction with fellow thoroughbred selectors, Marcus Corban and Fortuna’s NZ Trainer, Mark Walker, had conducted extensive inspections over the previous six weeks. As always, our focus was very much on type and any Fillies that made the shortlist needed to have ticked several boxes before they could be on the list. We also had a budget and we are firm on not going above budget. Our budget for this year sale was NZ$120,000 and we managed to secure this classy Filly for NZ$120,000 from her Consigners, Lansdowne Park
Pedigree
This Filly’s Sire, Written Tycoon needs little introduction, being the Australian Champion Sire in 2020/21 and consistently one of Australia’s leading Stallions in recent years – he now stands for a private fee, but his last publicly announced stud fee (2022 season) was A$165,000, as befits a Stallion who has sired 832 winners from 1087 mares served. He has sired 54 Stakes Winners altogether including 12 Group One winners. Written Tycoon is renowned as a Sire of very good 2yo’s, Coolongatta, Capitalist and Written By to name just three of his Australian headliners and of course is the Sire of Velocious, who won this year’s edition of the Karaka Millions 2yo race.
Our Filly is the first foal of the two time Australian winner and multiple Group 3 placed, Selica (by Makfi). Selica is a half sister to WYNDSPELLE (Iffraaj) a very good racehorse (and now Stallion at Stud) who won the Group One Captain Cook Stakes and was placed eight times at Group One Level (he kept running into the Champion Melody Belle during his career!!!) This is a strong New Zealand family with a lot of 2yo winners on the pedigree page.
You should note that this Filly was “pinhooked” by her Karaka Sales Vendors for A$110k out of the 2023 Magic Millions National Weanling Sale, which only underlines just how well we have done (sometimes we get lucky) to secure her for the price we did
Physical type
This Filly, whom we have given the Stable Name “Silky” presents as a strong, powerful type of good size – an early September foal, she is very forward and looks to be an early runner
Written Tycoon – Selica Yearling Filly
Preparation and Racing Plans
“Silky” has been transported to Te Akau Stud in the western Waikato – she will paddock spell there for approximately six weeks before commencing her breaking in process. This usually takes around 5 to 6 weeks and after being broken in she will travel to the Matamata stables of Te Akau Racing, where under the close eye of Fortuna’s trainers, Mark Walker and Sam Bergerson, she will have her first stable preparation – this will last about three weeks and after that she will go for a further paddock spell before returning to Matamata for a more complete preparation – physically, she is very forward, with a 1st September foaling date and looks like she will be an early runner but does have the scope and physique to train on as a 3yo – we think, however, that she has a “natural 2yo” look about her and that she could well be up and running well before Christmas, which puts her nicely in the frame as a genuine Karaka Millions 2yo (run for a Stake of $1m) prospect with that race being run late January 2025.
Here is what our Selection Team have to say about this Filly
Te Akau Racing Principal David Ellis says “John, this is a big statement, but I think this Written Tycoon Filly was the buy of the sale – a simply lovely physical type with an outstanding pedigree page, we just loved her at inspections, very athletic and forward and acquired at an unbelievable price”
Fortuna Racing’s Trainer Mark Walker says
“John, just pure quality this Filly, by an absolute Champion Sire with plenty of black type on the dam side and plenty of 2yo form on the pedigree page as well. She ticks a lot of boxes with her physical type and to my eye, she is just a natural 2yo type who will be up and running nice and early but has the scope to develop into a quality 3yo. She is a lovely walking Filly with a beautiful head on her and I am still shaking my head that we were able to acquire her for you at this sort of money”
Syndicator’s view (John Galvin)
“I was initially shocked when I was advised that this Filly had been passed in and we were a chance to secure her – to my eye she had been a standout at inspections and I just loved her pedigree page, but for those reasons I assumed she would be beyond our budget reach – however sometimes you get lucky, she vetted perfectly and we are very proud to have secured her and to be able to offer her to our clients as a genuine Karaka Million 2yo opportunity”
Karaka Millions Race Series
Note that “Silky” is registered for the Karaka Millions Race Series. This means she is eligible to run in the Karaka Millions 2yo event over 1200m for $1m, run at Ellerslie in January of 2025 and the Karaka Millions 3yo event over 1600m for $1.5m, run at Ellerslie in January of 2026 – she is also eligible to run in the NZB Kiwi – the new “slot” race for 3yos over 1500m for prizemoney of NZ$3.5m, run in March of 2026.
