Mohawk has been identified by Fortuna Trainers, the Singapore based, Mark Walker, and New Zealand based, Jamie Richards, as an ideal type for New Zealand/Australian racing. Now a Two Old Gelding, Mohawk was originally acquired by James Harron Bloodstock as a yearling at the 2020 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale for A$160,000 on behalf of a high profile ownership group who fancied him as a Stallion prospect. However after two trials 10 days apart in December 2020 and showing signs of coltyness, his ownership group decided to sell him unreserved, as they did not want to race a gelding, preferring to focus on Stallion prospects.
Fortuna acquired Mohawk at the January Inglis Online Sale for A$65,000 – sold as a Colt, we had him gelded within a couple of days of purchase. He arrived in NZ 3rd March and is now being prepared for racing by NZ’s current Champion Trainer, Jamie Richards, at the Te Akau Racing Stables, based at Matamata – Jamie gave him 3 weeks work up until 23 March and then concluded that he needs a 6 week paddock break for more maturity – he will return to work mid May and be aimed at one of the early Spring trials and then be set on a 3yo racing campaign.
Mohawk has an outstanding pedigree. He is by the young Stallion, Extreme Choice, a very fast racehorse, a dual Group One winner winning the Blue Diamond as a 2yo and the Moir Stakes as a 3yo – he is currently featuring high in the Australasian 1st season Sire rankings with 3 winners from 9 starters, including the Golden Slipper winner Stay Inside and NZ 2yo Te Akau trained runner, Palamos. Mohawks dam, Ben’s Duchess, won 4 times in the USA, twice at Group 3 level and was Group One placed and won as a Two Year Old – she descends from a very strong USA family with many winners at Group and Listed level. Mohawk was prepared by Peter and Paul Snowden, the prominent Sydney based Trainers – he had two trials in December, 10 days apart (somewhat surprisingly) for two 5th placings. He has had no race day starts so will be making his race day debut when he has his first New Zealand start.
AA strong, handsome, athletic Chestnut Gelding, standing 15.3 hands high and weighing 500 kgs, Mohawk has the physical attributes to match his pedigree.
Trainers View (Jamie Richards)
“I finally got the chance to inspect this horse in the flesh 3rd March after previously viewing his trials replays – he is a sweet moving type of good size and physique – he has a very strong pedigree and I am expecting him to potentially race as a Two Year Old in the late Autumn and develop into a very nice Three Year Old here in NZ”

“Mohawk is an impressive physical type by an up and coming Sire. I thought his first trial on 8th December was very good and he pulled up shin sore after his 2nd trial so was hard to get a line on him from that trial. He was a high priced yearling who was well sought by buyers at his sale, vetted perfectly and now that we have gelded him, I am tipping he will develop and mature significantly over the next two to three months and win races in New Zealand very quickly.”
“Mark Walker and I have been making a bit of an art form of selecting well bred tried horses at “budget” prices over the last year or two – Federation, Red Rover, Brutus, Ronaldo’s Dream, Hadeer and Entertainer, all being good examples who have all won races for us in Singapore. We then secured Navalha for New Zealand racing and he has now raced twice for us in NZ and won twice and we have high expectations that Mohawk can follow a similar path once in NZ. Now that he has been gelded and enjoying a good paddock spell in NSW, we believe he can do a good job for us in New Zealand – he is a very nice physical type who, like many Australian trained horses, was probably pushed along too early and should benefit immensely from the regime we have applied since acquiring him.”
