About The Yearling Filly by Reliable Man out of Conferre (“Connie”)

This Filly by Reliable Man was selected on behalf of Fortuna by the Te Akau Selection Team of David Ellis, Jamie Richards and Mark Walker assisted by Joe Walls and Marcus Corban from the  NZ Bloodstock Yearling Sale held at Karaka in New Zealand in early March.

David and his team had been working on a brief provided to them by Fortuna Racing’s John Galvin to select a nicely pedigreed, physically correct Yearling Filly, preferably a Grey, which had the attributes to develop into an Oaks type Filly as a Three Year Old and a genuine staying prospect as an older Mare. As always, Fortuna had set a budget and the Team identified two likely prospects from Book 2 of the Sale.  Lot 775, the Reliable Man – Conferre Filly came in under budget and was knocked down to the David Ellis/Fortuna Racing bid for $35,000. We have given this Filly the Stable nickname “Connie”

Pedigree

CONNIE is the beneficiary of  a very stout pedigree. Her Sire, Reliable Man was a top class Stayer, winning five times from 14 starts at trips from 2000 to 2400m – he won twice at Group One level, firstly at Chantilly in France and then at Royal Randwick in Sydney, where he won the Queen Elizabeth Stakes, defeating Dundeel. He is the Sire of over 300 winners, including 18 Stakes winners. These include the Victorian Oaks winner, Miami Bound, the NZ Oaks winner, Miss Sentimental and the current Western Austrian glamour Mare, Inspirational Girl

Connie’s Dam is Conferre, a daughter of the renowned Stallion and Broodmare Sire, Encosta De Lago and a four time winner on the track in Australia at distances from 1400m to 2400m. She has left two winners to date. The Grand Dam Confer (by Danehill) won 3 times at Group level and was 4^th in the VRC Oaks and the 3^rd dam, Shackle (by Luskin Star) won at Group level and was 2^nd in the VRC Oaks – clearly this is a family with very stout staying blood

“Given the brief by John Galvin to find him an Oaks type Filly, this striking grey really caught my eye when doing inspections. She has size and scope, is by a proven Sire of Stayers, particularly staying Mares, she has a beautiful walk and is very relaxed. Interesting to note that her dam won at 2400m in Victoria, but also won as a 2yo, so this Filly could be a chance of running as an Autumn 2yo, but ultimately she will come into her own during her 3yo season and as an older mare – the family has tremendous bloodlines and has enjoyed a lot of success in the distance events. At just $35,000 purchase price, she represents great value”
