NZB Karaka Millions Mega Maiden Series Races Announced
By
NZ Racing Desk

Karaka Millions riches are set to be amplified next season, with horses eligible for the lucrative NZB Karaka Millions Series racing for an additional $1m in bonuses. This exciting series is comprised of 40 non-Saturday Maiden races to be run from September 2024 through to May 2025. A $25,000 bonus will be struck if a Karaka Millions eligible horse, three years or older, wins one of the races shown below. The winning owner(s) will receive $20,000 and the successful trainer $5,000.

“This series is a great opportunity to boost field sizes across the country outside of our premier racedays, and will give those Karaka Million Eligible horses a chance to compete for a significant bonus,” Darin Balcombe, NZTR COO said “The selected races provide a spread of region and distance to provide maximum opportunity. We are excited to bring this series to the regions.”

The following conditions also apply to the 40 races:
No horse that is KM eligible will be given preference in terms of entry to a race, normal maiden balloting conditions will apply. In the event of a KM Bonus race being divided KM Eligible horses will be placed in one race. This will be given priority.

Des Coppins – Guest Selector
Here is what Des has to say this week

Greetings John and the Fortuna team
It was a frustrating day with the 3 last Saturday with Show of Love missing the kick and getting on heels at the top of the straight; La Parisienne running with a slipped saddle and Who Knows caught on a limb.
She can be a fickle game at times but we’ve had a respectable run with the best bets on the email tipping service ( with several Fortuna investors on board) including the $8 winner My Chablis midweek at Cambridge.
Incidentally for this week only I’m inviting potential clients a special offer of just $200 ( gst inclusive) for the email service dcoppins@ xtra.co.nz to start immediately. Drop me a line and all will be revealed and the payment takes you right up until August 31 ( approx 60 NZ gallops race days).

Three to watch for this weekend.

Old Town Road, race 7, Trentham

He’s had two runs and he looks pretty much spot on to deliver. He gets a 3kgs allowance and the track conditions will be right up his alley. He was bogged down on the inside of the track at Wanganui last time and in wet ground at Wanganui they go up and down on the one spot when pinned near the rail.
Old Town Road has won 7 races, all in heavy ground at distances varying from 1100 to 1400m.

Te Rapa, Silver Javelin r9

She was game in defeat here two starts ago when we were on board and you can almost put a line through the run she received last time at Counties where she began awkwardly and while improving near the 900 she got on heels and that clearly upset her rhythm.
Let’s go again!

Highlighter, r4 Te Rapa

I made her the best bet last time and she delivered after giving the leaders a big start in the early stages.
The pace will be on and that’ll suit a back marker like her.
She races so well on this track and the 3kgs claim gives her a massive pull in the weights over the speedy Babylon Berlin. On a wettish track, the weight relief is gold!
She’s 3rd up and in this state she’s never been out of the money in 4 prior preps!
Good punting this weekend.
