Fortuna has four runners Friday and Saturday

Te Rapa Friday

MALBOROUGH BAY contests the rating 75 1400 meter event race nine at 4:53 pm with Jess Allen, claiming 2kgs, from the outside barrier – good performance for 4th  when resuming at Matamata 4th September – Will need a lot of luck from his wide barrier draw over this trip, but if he gets it can certainly be in contention. TAB says “improver on fresh up run, carpark barrier, winning 2 kg claimer atop” – he is certainly not favoured in the markets with odds of $26/$6.50 on offer

Moonee Valley Friday

BELLATRIX STAR  goes in search of Group 3 honours, contesting the Scarborough Stakes – race 5 @ 8.15 pm Aus time (10.15pm NZT) with Mick Dee to ride from Barrier 8. Fresh from a dominant win down the Flemington chute 1100m 14th Sept, she has to contend with the tricky Moonee Valley track for the first time here, but is well suited by the set weight conditions. Sure to be competitive again – TAB says “well placed – had the right run last time, but is impossible to knock” – showing odds of $8.50/$2.80

John is attending this meeting along with a small group of syndicate Members

Singapore Saturday

ELLIOT NESS backs up his emphatic win last week in the Class 4 1100m Poly event – race three at 1.30 pm with Manoel Nunes to ride from barrier five – dominant 5l win easing down this trip and surface – holds the Singapore Track record for this trip. Has been slugged 4kgs by the handicapper, but is in great form and has a good draw this week – can win this. TAB says “the race is well within his grasp”- no odds posted yet but will be short

Here is what the STC tipsters have to say about this race;

1st Pick: ELLIOT NESS (2)
Big win last time out, sat outside the leader, Surrey Hills and blew his rivals away in a few strides. He’s come back bigger and better this campaign and looks to repeat that performance this week. Small field, one to beat.
2nd Pick: SURREY HILLS (1)
He stuck on nicely last start behind Elliot Ness, should look to push forward from barrier one and could be a danger here. Apprentice Seow claims two kilograms.
3rd Pick: V’INVINCIBLE (8)
He does his best work late in the piece, worked home from the tail last start and didn’t get a clean run. Could surprise in this field.
4th Pick: PACIFIC COMMANDER (4)
Always been a prominent sprinter for the leading Ong Stable and Daniel Moor rides again. He should get every chance from barrier four but needs to lift his form.

ROCKY also backs up from last week in the Class 5 1700m Poly event – race eight at 1.30 pm with Simon Kok to ride from  barrier nine – beaten 6l 1800m Turf last week – was quite disappointing last week over racing in the run and one paste down the straight – drops back to Class 5 which helps his cause and gets the polytrack, a surface on which he has won all three of his Singapore races – blinkers come off also –  his form is hardly inspiring however the class drop, change in surface and blinkers coming off combine to produce a better showing at his last race in Singapore. TAB says “Can make amends” – no odds posted yet

ELLIOT NESS scorches away to win by 5 lengths at Singapore’s Kranji Racecourse – 21st September 2024

Seven year old ELLIOT NESS (Written Tycoon – Walk with Attitude) took no prisoners with a dominant 5 length win in Class 4 1100m Polytrack event at Singapore’s Kranji Racecourse 21st September. Ridden by Singapore’s champion jockey, Manoel Nunes, Elliot Ness was away brilliantly from his outside Barrier and settled in 2nd place just outside the leader. Going up to the leader as they turned for home, Nunes was just coasting on the horse, gathering in the leader quickly, then extending his lead, finishing the race with a five length margin in a time of 1.04.62. Sent out favourite by punters, Elliot Ness returned dividends of $2.80 the win and $1.20 the place on TAB NZ for his 5th career win in Singapore

ELLIOT NESS had won previously in January 2024 but then required some knee surgery, this leading to over six months away from the race track, with a resuming run on 18th August producing a strong finishing 4th

Trainer, Donna Logan, was present on course  and was a very happy trainer after the race “Won in outstanding fashion, he is a very talented racehorse who has had a chequered career due to injury setbacks, but just loves the 1100m distance – beautifully handled by Manoel Nunes – well done to John Galvin of Fortuna Racing and his ownership team.”

“Elliot Ness” – 5th Singapore Win – 21st September 2024 – Manoel Nunes aboard

Fortuna Racing’s John Galvin, watching from his home in Hamilton in New Zealand was also a happy man. “On paper, he looked a stand out to win this race and from the time he left the barriers, he always seemed to have the race in his control. Manoel rode him very professionally. Well done to to Donna Logan and her team for having this horse in such shape.”

ELLIOT NESS (who raced with the name PROHIBITION in Australia) was originally purchased as a Yearling at the 2019 Inglis Easter Yearling Sale for A$675,000 as a Stallion prospect for an Ownership Group comprising the China Horse Club and other high profile owners. Trained by  Peter and Paul Snowden in Sydney, he trialed twice in May 2020 for a  4th and a 6th placing and after determining that his trial form indicated that he was not up to Stallion making ability plus the fact that he was very Colty and needed to gelded, he was put up for sale unreserved and John Galvin acquired  him  at the May 2020 Inglis Online Sale for just A$35,000. He has now won five times and had nineteen other prizemoney placing from 30 starts in Singapore and has Stakes Earnings of S$216,000 for his Ownership Group consisting of 44 individuals from NZ, Australia and Hong Kong

About DREAMFLIGHT

DREAMFLIGHT was acquired by Fortuna Racing at the Inglis Sept (early) 2024 Sale – this after John Galvin along with Mark Walker had conducted significant due diligence. Our objective was to find a proven staying type whom we thought would fit in well to the Te Akau Racing Stables operation at Cranbourne in Victoria and whom may also be a potential jumping prospect later in his career. After winning twice in France as a 2yo at Stakes level, both times @ 1600m,  DREAMFLIGHT was acquired by Sydney Trainer, Bjorn Baker, for 250,000 Euros (approx NZ$450k) and as with many of the European imports, he found it difficult to acclimatise and adjust to the Sydney Stable environment, hence why his Owners offered him for sale after 11 starts in Sydney. But our analysis of his form concluded that he would be much better suited to the Victorian racing scene and would also benefit from a change to his training methods and the facilities that are available to him at Cranbourne

Pedigree

Sire – Frankel – one of the great racehorses of the modern era, unbeaten during his 14 race career and now the number one stallion in the world with a stud fee of GBP350,000 (NZ$700k approx)

Dam – Dream Peace – 4 time winner in her career including a win at Group 2 level in France and a multiple Group 1 and Group 3 placegetter in France and the USA – Dam of 5 foals to race, including the 2023 Epsom Oaks winner, Soul Sister, Dreamflight and Herman Hesse, the Victorian based galloper trained by Ciaran Maher, who has won six times at trips from 2000m to 2800m – Click HEREto view Dreamflight’s pedigree

Physical type

DREAMFLIGHT is a strong athletic gelding standing 16.1 hands high and tipping the scales at 500kgs. He is sound at the walk and trot, has a pleasant, even temperament and scoped clean. Click HERE to see him parading at the Te Akau Cranbourne Stables.

DREAMFLIGHT – by Frankel out of Dream Peace

Preparation and Racing Plans

Te Akau Racing Trainer Mark Walker says Dreamflight was acquired for an incredible price by Fortuna Racing at the Inglis Digital Sale.  Obviously his European form was very good with two black type wins as a 2yo. He was initially purchased by clients of Bjorn Baker for €250,000 from a sale in France – we analysed his Sydney form and we do think he is a horse that will be better suited to Victorian racing where we have plenty of races at 2400m plus and we do think we’ll be able to place him a lot more carefully in Victoria at various race meetings – he is down to a 75 rating (after arriving in Aus with a rating of 90) and this will provide us with plenty of options to place him well.

So we are quite confident that we have a very promising type here – he was thoroughly vetted to Hong Kong Standards and passed with no significant issues. Our Cranbourne Stable suits a horse like this down to the ground, we have a magnificent sand dune track, where they can work in long straight lines and also work uphill – these staying types just love that and we can really get them rock hard fit – we also have a beach not far away and this is great therapy for our staying types. Leaderboard just loves being at the beach as do all of our runners when they go there.  I’m very confident that we can turn his form around and make him a very exciting prospect on the flat and after he’s finished on the flat he would also be a very good jumping prospect”

Syndicator’s view (John Galvin)

Dreamflight has not been able to win in Sydney, but our view on that is that this is because he is a dead set stayer and simply hasn’t been allowed to get over enough distance. They have also tended to treat him as an on speed runner –  Mark and I have analysed all of his races and believe he would be much better ridden back. His best performance in Sydney was a second at Randwick on a Saturday where he led and was very brave to the line finishing in second place.” Click HERE to see that race replay

Guest Selector – Des Coppins

I hope readers hopped aboard Arabian Songbird last week at great odds.  Des has been having a really consistent run with his selections of late – I know several of our readers are subscribers to Des’ full service (as I am myself) and have been getting very pleasing results

Here is what Des has to say this week

Greetings John and the Fortuna team

I hope your week went well and it surely was a decent enough start with Arabian Songbird hitting the right notes for us at Ellerslie with a commanding win at a big price. She’s one to follow. As is Frank the Tank who loomed large after getting too far back at Wanganui. Please stay with him once the track’s improve. I’m not saying he’s totally unsuited by wet ground but for last Saturday’s underfoot conditions the effort told us he may have been a run short!

What a few weeks we have in front of us  with classy racing?

I’m looking forward to maintaining a decent strike rate with the best bets for my subscribers.
For the record over the  last 14 meetings we’ve had 10 wins and 3 placings with the best bets.Race by race tips and value bets haven’t been too shabby either with a $27 midweek winner just the other day as a highlight.

Why not join?

Up until November 30 there are 57 meetings and if you would like the full service of race by race tips to accompany the best bet and value bet for each meeting for the generous subscription of $200 ( gst inclusive at $3.50 approx per meeting) please drop me an email dcoppins@ xtra.co.nz and I’ll put you in! It’d be great to have you on board. Tips, exclusive to your email, arrive before 9am each race day.

Excitement begins on Saturday at Hastings and I’m happy to hand a couple here who I think will go well but continue with strong form throughout the season.

No Rain Ever, race three, Hastings

She ran 4th in a recent trial and was travelling better than the 3 that finished in front of her in my humble opinion.
The stable has always rated her.
She won first up last season 12 months ago and immediately took on the Hawkes Bay Guineas. She wasn’t quite up to it that day but she continued to improve with winning or placed form in 3 black type races.
Whatever she does on Saturday she will certainly improve upon and a decent stakes race is on the cards before too long.

December, race 6, Hastings

He won his first race and looked well above average in just 6 starts with 3 wins.
He wasn’t far away in three unplaced runs, two of which were at group 3 and one at group 2.
A feature of his racing is the way he ran through the line.
We should get a good run for our money on Saturday  but I’ll be surprised if he doesn’t feature prominently in all his racing this season.

DuPont, race one, Te Rapa ( Friday)

It was a super one and only run last term and this three year old has been doing everything right this season at jump outs to have him spot on for a bold showing.
He’s been placed in two recent jump outs at Ellerslie.
He holds a nomination for the 2000 Guineas.
Good punting!

Fortuna has three runners Saturday and SundaySingapore Saturday

ELLIOT NESS contests the Class 4 1100m Poly event – race three at 1.30 pm with Manoel Nunes to ride from an outside barrier draw – strong 3rd this trip when resuming he is ready to run a bold race here – holds the Singapore Track record for this trip. Outside draw makes it slightly tricky, but is just a field of eight runners and Nunes is a master – can win this. TAB says ” improver, who is an excellent winning chance “- no odds posted yet

Here is what the STC tipsters have to say about this race;

1st Pick: ELLIOT NESS (5)
Has drawn wide so will have to work out some tactics from that alley but Nunes retains the ride, and he was making up good ground last start. Holds the course record over this distance.
2nd Pick: PACIFIC COMMANDER (4)
Thrives on this surface and the important stat to look at with him is the last time he won he was rated 57 and gets back to the same mark. Talented type.
3rd Pick: LUCKY BABY (3)
Could be the surprise runner in this field. Form his eighteen Kranji starts he has only been on the Polytrack four times and placed on one of those. Watch the market.
4th Pick: PACIFIC ANGEL (6)
Not sure why she was in that turf race last start but put a line through that as she has never finished top four from five turf starts. Back to her favored surface and looks value.

ROCKY races in the Class 4 1800m Turf event – race three at 1.30 pm with Simon Kok to ride from an outside barrier draw – ran 4th 1600m Poly 1st Sept at 3rd run back from a long break from racing – is looking for more distance and gets it here – not favoured by the tipsters but can feature here at very good odds – TAB says “doesn’t pose too much of a threat” – no odds posted yet

Flemington – Sunday

OUR PARAMOUR races in the Crown Oaks Preview, a 3yo Fillies event over 1800mRace 5 @ 3.50 Aus time (5.50pm NZT) and will be ridden by Blake Shinn from the ace draw. Desperately unlucky not to win on her race day debut at Cranbourne over 1300m 3rd September, she faces a fair rise in distance here, but is a natural stayer who will love the Flemington track and will be ridden by a top jockey in Blake Shinn. Her track gallop at Cranbourne on Tuesday was exceptional and she is ready to really fire here. TAB says “should relish this trip and can win” – showing odds of $3.90/$1.65″

Huge thrills for Bellatrix Star Syndicate Members who were on course at Flemington 14th September

As Bellatrix Star took a narrow gap 275m from the finish on Saturday at Flemington and surged to a dominant victory in the (Listed) Cap D’antibes Stakes, there was yelling and yahooing from almost every corner of New Zealand, given that she has an ownership base that stretches from Kerikeri in the north to Cromwell in the south – however on course at Flemington we had five owners who had made the trip across the Tasman – Nigel and Tania Gregory from Tauranga, Ollie and Hazel Lawrence from Cambridge and John Carr who had made the long trip from Cromwell to attend – Ollie and Hazel were accompanied by their son Mark and their good friend Des Hurst and John was accompanied by his son Graeme.

Also present in our group was three Melbourne based teenage boys. Alexander, Max and Willare all senior students at Xavier College in Melbourne, who are budding racing enthusiasts and whom I had met at Caulfield a few weeks ago when Bellatrix Star made her Melbourne debut – this led me to invite these fine young men to attend Flemington last week and join our ownership group as guests – you can imagine that simply being on track on a big day of racing as part of an ownership group would be thrill enough, but you could imagine how these young guys felt seeing our wonderful Filly winning in such stylish fashion. It reminded me very much of my own formative years in racing attending Trentham races as a teenager with my own schoolmates

Fortuna launches its 150th Syndicate

The launching of this syndicate this week gave me cause for reflection. We started Fortuna back in January 2007 at a time when I was running my very successful financial services business – this following the success I had had with horses in private ownership – the stakes winner Kapsdan and the Champion Darci Brahma  – I have been encouraged by David Ellis to start my own syndication business and so we did so, although to be fair it was being being done very much on a “hobby business” approach.

Looking back in my records, in 2007 we acquired five yearlings that year and remarkably four of those were winners. He’s Licarocket was the first winner for us, he was ridden by Michael Walker at his first win and Daniel Stackhouse at his second. We then had Sir invincible who won twice for us at Riccarton as a two-year-old in the hands of Troy Harris and subsequently ran in the very first Karaka Million (unplaced) –  and then Volkarrie won for us ridden by Samantha Collett in his first win and James McDonald in  his second – the best was still to come however, because at the Magic Millions sale in June of 2007 David Ellis had selected a Tale of The Cat yearling for us, who went on to become  Tell A Tale  – he won once as a two year old but then had a remarkable stretch as a three-year-old – he won four successive stakes races, the Hawkes Bay Guineas, the Canterbury Stakes and the NZ 2000 Guineas (for a stake of $1 million) and then the Avondale Guineas, ridden by Troy Harris in all four of those wins. Looking back through my client list for Tell A Tale, I see we have several members of that syndicate who are still current clients today, notably Noel and Gillian Caskey, Stephen Turner, Peter and Prue Hobill, Joan Jolley, Dave Crumby, Greg Sheppard, Joy Hickling and Jacqui Quinn – a big thank you to all of those people for being with us for so long

Looking back at early milestones, syndicate number 50 was a yearling colt by Stratum out of The Party Stand, which is quite remarkable given that The Party Stand is the grand dam of Bellatrix Star – we named this colt Grand Via and he was extremely fast, however at his second start at  Ellerslie, he was galloped on and that unfortunately bought his career to an end  – syndicate number 100 was a yearling by Deep field out of Miss Fi – after a couple of early starts in New Zealand, when he was called Polaris, he went to Singapore to race where, now renamed Trident, he won four times for us – he is now owned by Malaysian interests and he won a stakes race in that jurisdiction recently. He is a half brother to Lux Libertas, the Kylie Bax owned Filly, who has recently won four times in a row.

Suffice to say Fortuna Racing is no longer a “hobby business” although is still very much “boutique” just being run by Jessica and myself from our Hamilton home, with part-time assistance by Deb Mellow, who provides invaluable support for our accounting. And with Court Of Appeal and Bellatrix Star winning last Friday/Saturday, we have brought up 253 wins in total for the Fortuna Team – this warrants a big thank you to the past and present clients who have supported us over the years – and so now we are launching our 150th syndicate and I think this one is quite remarkable. I would never have thought that I could buy a son of Frankel for A$30,000 but we have done so and now Dreamflight is available for syndication see full details below

Sadly, the “rags to riches story” that was the stallion, ZED, has come to an end with his passing during the week after suffering about colic – Fortuna has always had an affinity with this wonderful stallion because a few years ago we had syndicated his full brother Zabene (Zabeel – Emerald Dream), who counted the Metropolitan Gold Trophy at Riccarton among his successes and of course we currently have Zedwilldo in training with Brett Scott at Mornington in Victoria.  Despite his passing the Zed legacy will live on, because as we write this, he has many crops on the ground racing, two year olds being prepared for the new season, yearlings to be offered at upcoming sales, foals on the ground born in recent weeks or still in utero and this season he served many mares before his eventual passing – and as we know with the Zeds, they have great longevity, so we are bound to be hearing his name many, many times over the next decade or so

See story below from the NZ Racing Desk

Grangewilliam Stud stallion Zed, the sire of 11-time Group One winner and Gr.1 Melbourne Cup (3200m) heroine Verry Elleegant, has passed away, aged 22. “He suffered a bout of colic and the only option was surgery,” Grangewilliam Stud principal Mark Corcoran said. At his age, we just didn’t want to do that to him and unfortunately, we made the decision to euthanise him.”

The well-bred son of Zabeel had just four starts on the track before initially joining the stallion roster at Little Avondale Stud. He then spent time in the South Island where he was serving Clydesdale mares at Erewhon Station before his progeny started to make a strong account of themselves, encouraging Corcoran to enquire about standing him at his Waitotara farm in 2013.The son of Zabeel produced the fairytale comeback as a sire, producing 187 individual winners, 17 at stakes level, and three Group One winners in Survived, Ladies Man and most notably, Verry Elleegant.

“I didn’t have much in the way of stallion firepower at the time and I was looking for a horse. I noticed that the stock of Zed were just starting to perform on the race tracks,” Corcoran said. “I approached Sam Williams, who did a really good job of kicking off his career at Little Avondale, and we came to an arrangement to stand him here. Not long after we had done the deal and we got him here, Zed popped up with some stakes horses like Survived and Ambitious Champion. He served a massive book that first year we had him (168 mares) and I think he was the busiest horse in New Zealand that year. It just went on from there and it is a story that people love. He was sacked to the back blocks covering Clydesdale mares and he came back and left a Melbourne Cup winner along with a lot of other really good horses.”

Verry Elleegant’s achievements in Australia put Zed’s name up in lights, winning an incredible 11 Group One races at a variety of distances, including the Australian Oaks (2400m), Winx Stakes (1400m), Chipping Norton Stakes (1600m) (twice), Caulfield Cup (2400m), and her crowning success, the 2021 Melbourne Cup (3200m), which provided Corcoran with a memory he’ll never forget.

“He’s certainly been a great ambassador for Grangewilliam and having a superstar like Verry Elleegant put us in the spotlight,” Corcoran said. “Zed has left us with many special memories. My family and local friends will all fondly remember sharing the excitement we had in our garden during COVID cheering Verry Elleegant home to win the Melbourne Cup. He’s kept the mares coming in the front gate over the years and kept us going through some tough times and we’re in a place now where we’ve got some really nice stallions around us and a lot of that is thanks to Zed.”

Alongside the phenomenal mare, Ladies Man, the winner of the Gr.1 Livamol Classic (2040m), and Survived, winner of the Gr.1 Makfi Challenge Stakes (1400m), headlined the success of Zed in his homeland. The versatility of Zed was exemplified with the success of Zed Em, a million-dollar jumping star who won 17 races, including three editions of the Von Doussa Steeplechase (3250m) and the iconic Grand Annual Steeplechase (5500m).

On the day of his passing, Zed was once again in the forefront of the jumping scene, with his son Lord Spencer winning the Great Northern Hurdles (4200m) at Te Rapa for JJ Rayner. “He’s always been consistent and left those tough, hardy horses. They have plenty of his sire Zabeel in them and he left staying qualities,” Corcoran said. “He sired the winners of most of the major Cups in New Zealand and obviously it’s the same with the jumping races. His progeny won pretty well all the major jumps races in Australia and New Zealand, with Zed Em winning in excess of A$1 million in prizemoney, while Affluential looks a rising star and only yesterday Lord Spencer won the Great Northern Hurdles.”

The legacy of Zed will live on, with the longevity and nature of his progeny ensuring he will be a part of New Zealand racing for many years to come. There’s certainly a nice volume still to come through as he covered books of 77, 51 and 46 over the past three years, so there should be some nice horses to look forward to,” Corcoran said. “The great thing with them is they’re probably going to be around for a long time yet. As we know they take time and are still racing as nine and 10-year-olds, so we should be hearing about Zed for a long while to come.”

Shares for Sale in the Fortuna Racemare HAYATE

We first posted this opportunity last week and there has been a solid take up of the shares available, but still 5% left – available at $50 now and $50 per month ongoing from 1 October for each 1% – so please make contact with me if you are keen to participate – see full details below

An opportunity has arisen for shares to be acquired in the Fortuna six year old racemare Hayate (by Maurice out of half sister to a Caulfield Cup winner) – she has a very strong pedigree – her race day form has been moderate but she has collected four wins and nine places from 28 race day starts and her last two wins have been at 1550m and 2000m  with the win at 2000m being particularly strong. Click HERE to view that race replay. She campaigned at Riccarton during her last preparation but in her only race beyond 1600m she had to carry a big weight in an amateur riders race and simply got too far back to be able to feature

She is now spelling at Te Akau Stud,  but when she resumes shortly, our plan is to get her up in trip as soon as we can because we believe that she is a genuine staying type who will appreciate getting over more ground. Interestingly enough, when she was at Riccarton, Mark and Sam introduced quite a bit of schooling over the good sized hurdles at Riccarton into her routine and she proved to be quite adept at that,  so while she will continue to pursue flat racing options during her next campaign, we plan to give her a hurdles trial in the autumn and maybe a race or two over the jumps during the jumping season just to see how she takes to it.

Recently we had some members who indicated that they would like to exit the syndicate so we went through an exercise where she was listed on Gavelhouse with a decent reserve in place – this in order to establish a market value. There was an opening bid of $5000 and no other bids on top of that, so for the purpose of those who are exiting the syndicate, value had been established at $50 for each one percent share – some of those shares have now been taken up by other syndicate members, but there are still a few left and we are now making those available to our wider ownership group.

So if you have interest in being involved in this lovely racemare on very good incoming terms, the opportunity exists to take up shares at $50 for each one percent share and $50 per month ongoing for each one percent share from the 1st of October – all you need to do participate in this is email me or alternatively call/text me on 021 921460

Guest Selector – Des Coppins

Here is what Des has to say this week

Greetings John and the Fortuna team

How good was it to see one of the star two year olds of last season Bellatrix Star win last Saturday at Flemington? There’s no doubt she’s in for a terrific season if that win is anything to go by.

Last week it was sad to see such atrocious weather conditions abort the racing in the Naki and it became a bit of a guessing game for the racing there but Riccarton gave us two out of three from the multi with the equally impressive Age of Discovery and Retail Therapy winning.

Let’s now turn our attention to Saturday with three to follow.

Arabian Songbird, race 8 at Ellerslie.

Last season as a three year old retired trainer Peter Williams rated her and she did look promising in her handful of runs. She’s now in a new stable and I didn’t mind the way she’s trialled. I humbly suggest she’s forward to give some cheek but importantly she is one to follow.

Pirates ‘N’ Gold race three at Ellerslie

I tipped this horse out at Ruakaka at 20 to one and unfortunately it jumped on the wrong foot and gave the leaders too much of a start. He weaved his way through the bunch to end with the quickest sectionals and maybe with a stronger rider booked on Saturday it may be ridden a whole lot closer to the pace. The draw is a slight concern, however,  but hopefully it will get cover  and again  I’m suggesting he’s worth follow post Ellerslie for win number one.

Frank the Tank, race 5 Wanganui

A jump out and a trial has this bloke almost spot on. He came to hand quickly last season and looked well above average. While staying is clearly his forte don’t be at all surprised to see him hitting the line solidly and getting some of the money at a big price.

Good punting!

Fortuna’s 3yo Filly, BELLATRIX STAR wins big at Flemington – 14th September 2024

Eclipse Stakes (Gr. 2, 1200m) winner Bellatrix Star (3 f Star Witness – Alana’s Party, by Exceed and Excel) recorded a brilliant second-up victory in the A$175,000 Cap D’Antibes Stakes (Listed, 1100m) on Saturday at Flemington.

Appearing muscled up and ready for action, having done well to finish fifth when resuming in the Quezette Stakes (Gr. 3, 1100m) on 17 August at Caulfield, Bellatrix Star had recorded both her wins as a two-year-old on Soft7 footing and received the exact same conditions.

Bellatrix Star was ridden again by ex-pat Kiwi Mick Dee, who has enjoyed considerable success with trainer Mark Walker since setting up stables for Te Akau last season at Cranbourne, with stakes wins aboard Imperatriz (I Am Invincible) in the McEwen Stakes (Gr. 2, 1000m), Campionessa (Contributer) in the Peter Young Stakes (Gr. 2, 1800m), and Sans Doute (Not A Single Doubt) in the ATA/Bob Hoysted Stakes (Listed, 1000m).

Finalist for Champion Two-Year-Old last season in New Zealand, Bellatrix Star was let find her feet at the rear of a compact field by Dee, tracked up behind race favourite Drifting (Zousain) inside the 300m and once clear she charged home for an impressive victory.

A winner of the first two-year-old race of the season last year, over 800 metres at Wanganui, Bellatrix Star ran the 1100 metres in 1:05.9 on Soft7 track conditions and after drifting to $26.00 fixed odds she ended up returning $14.10 & $3.70 on the NZ TAB tote.

Click HERE to watch the race replay

“It’s basically New Zealand conditions today, it’s freezing, it’s wet, so she just loved it,” Mark Walker, who was on track, said.“She got a lovely run and Mick (Dee) presented her at the right time, so got all favours, but she was one of our better two-year-olds at home in New Zealand, and it’s encouraging that they can measure up in Australia.”

Since her resuming run in the Quezette Stakes (Gr. 3, 1100m), Bellatrix Star had been off the training property for a racecourse gallop.

“We took her to Moonee Valley one morning to give her a look around that track, with the Scarborough Stakes (Gr. 3, 1200m) on 27th Sept in the back of our minds, and she worked really well,” Walker said. “But she just looked terrific in the yard today and we were very happy with her.”

BELLATRIX STAR in action Flemington 14th Sept 2024 – Mick Dee aboard

Owned by Fortuna Bellatrix Star Syndicate (Mgr: John Galvin), she was purchased for $80,000 by David Ellis CNZM and John Galvin at the Karaka 2023 Book 1 Sale, from the draft of Phoenix Park, and her three wins have yielded nearly $340,000  in prize money.

Not in attendance  at Flemington but with Fortuna runners at Riccarton, John Galvin said after the race: “We had 11 people in our group today at Flemington, with six owners and five guests. Syndicate Member Tania Gregory gave the speech on behalf of the owners and those Members who were there on the day  have been messaging me saying just what an incredible experience it was to be at Flemington on the big stage and win a race like that with this lovely filly. If we go back and look at her form, on New Year’s Day in the Eclipse Stakes at Pukekohe, she beat both Velocious and Move To Strike and they both went on to win Group One races in the Autumn, with Velocious also winning the Karaka Million.

“She suffered a bit of a shin setback after the Karaka Million, and didn’t get to contest the Group One races, so we spelled her, but I think the ability and talent was always there. All credit to Mark Walker, he said to me I think we need to send this filly to Australia. She’s and out and out sprinter and will get more sprinting opportunities in Victoria than she will here in New Zealand. It was a great call by him and also by the syndicate members to support the decision. It’s always a big call to take a young horse from New Zealand and throw them into the deep end in Australia, but she was very good when she resumed at Caulfield, in her first race for six months. She drew wide and finished fifth, not beaten far, and since then her work has been exceptional.

“While not overly confident today, I knew she would run a good race and I tipped her out as a top three chance. It’s a big stage (Flemington) and we’ve won there before with the wonderful Melody Belle, in the Empire Rose Stakes (Gr. 1, 1600m), and I’m just so happy for the ownership group that were there to experience it all. It adds hugely to her residual value as a broodmare and I don’t think she’s done yet by any means.

“I was with some long-standing Fortuna clients, watching the race from Riccarton, and after seeing her getting the gaps,  I said to them, with 200m to go, that I think she’s got this. She likes to get back and have one last crack at them, as she did at Pukekohe, and that’s how she was tipped out by the Melbourne Herald Sun racing journalist during the week, who predicted she would actually do that.”

Stallion Star Witness (Starcraft) was a dominant winner of the Coolmore Stud Stakes (Gr. 1, 1200m), also down the straight at Flemington, before becoming a successful sprint sire in Australia.

Grand-sire of the filly, Starcraft (Soviet Star) is well known in New Zealand, having won two legs of the Group One Triple Crown at Hawkes Bay. He won Group One races in Australia, France, and England, and became a World Champion Turf Miler. Dam Alana’s Party is by Australian Champion Sire and leading broodmare sire Exceed and Excel (Danehill), who made a name for himself over two decades of world racing and breeding – just an extraordinary sire whose winners have numbered over 5500, 370 stakes winners, including 17 individual Group One winners. Grand-dam The Party Stand, by Stradbroke (Gr. 1, 1400m) winner Thorn Park (Spinning World), was an impressive winner from 1200m – 2000m, best around middle distances and included the N.Z. Stakes (Gr. 1, 2000m).

On the back of earlier successes by Bellatrix Star, Ellis purchased her half-brother by Royal Meeting (Invincible Spirit) in March this year at the Melbourne Yearling Sale.

“Imperatriz also won the Eclipse Stakes, just like Bellatrix Star and it’s fantastic to see her win so well at just her second start in Australia,” David Ellis said. Mark (Walker) and Ben (Gleeson) have done a fantastic job preparing her and she’s got plenty of improvement in her, too, looking at her coat in the parade ring. She was very good value buying, Bellatrix Star, and the two-year-old Royal Meeting colt named Royal Rendezvous has shown a lot already in our Melbourne stable. I’m always thrilled when Michael Dee rides a winner for us. He’s such a hard working young man, very talented jockey, was apprenticed to us for time in Matamata, and his father, Richard, is a great horseman and they’re a great family.Mick is one of the best riders in Melbourne, and we’re always happy to have him on.”

Bellatrix Star is owned and raced by the Fortuna Bellatrix Star Syndicate, an Ownership Group consisting of 69 individuals from New Zeland and Australia

Bellatrix Star was strapped by Wyatt Jenkins.

Fortuna 4yo Racemare COURT OF APPEAL breaks Maiden company Matamata 13th September 2024

Bred to go further, Court Of Appeal (4 m Eminent – Katy O’Beel, by Zabeel) recorded an encouraging victory in the $18,500 Entain/NZB Insurance Pearl Series Maiden Fillies & Mares 1400 metres (eligible $26,000 bonuses) on 13 September at Matamata in the hands of Opie Bosson. Unable to quicken on Heavy10 footing when resuming in the Maiden 1200 metres on 4 September at Matamata, Court Of Appeal presented in readiness for her second-up assignment. Court Of Appeal had placed three times to 2000 metres in her first campaign, and from a staying type family she was aided by increased distance and improved footing.

Stable rider Opie Bosson turned the outside barrier (12) into a positive when sending Court Of Appeal forward to travel in second, challenged to lead on straightening, found a length when asked inside the 200m and won with plenty of fortitude. It was second time Bosson had ridden Court Of Appeal, having previously finished third in the Pearl Series Maiden 1600 metres last November at Te Aroha.

We did a bit of work to get outside the leader, but she gave a good kick in the end and gave me the feel that she’ll go further,” said Bosson, who also won five times on grand-dam Katy Keen (Zorro’s Lad). On Soft7 footing, Court Of Appeal ran 1400 metres in 1:27.5, last 600m in 38.1, and plummeted from an earlier fixed odds quote of $12.00 to pay $4.70 & $1.60 on the NZ TAB tote.

Click HERE to see the race replay

Purchased for $20,000 by David Ellis CNZM and Fortuna Racing from the Karaka 2022 Book 2 Sale, from the draft of Brighthill Farm, she is owned by Fortuna Court Of Appeal Syndicate (Mgr: John Galvin).

On course with some of the owners, John Galvin said: “Thank you to the sponsors, Entain and New Zealand Bloodstock. Gee, what a miracle Entain has been for New Zealand racing, in partnership with the  the TAB, and thankfully we have averted a decline in stakes and instead seen some great increases.

“The guys and gals from Entain are passionate about the racing industry, all own shares in horses, love a bet, and they’re real racing people”

John also paid tribute to Team Te Akau “Marcus Corban is here in the winner’s circle with us today, and he helped us buy her at the sales along with David Ellis and Mark Walker. I’d asked them to pick out a staying type filly from Book 2 at Karaka, and I was prepared to go to $80,000 for this filly, but we did well and got her for $20,000. She showed a lot of promise last season and well done to Mark and Sam for giving her the time to develop and mature. I thought, today, if she was running third or fourth and finishing on I’d be really happy, but the fact that she’s won, after being used up quite a bit early, holds her in good stead as she gets over more ground.

John was also fulsome in his praise  of rider Opie Boson “Opie, what can I say, another genius ride to bounce her out and get her up on the speed. And notable that Opie rode his very first winner for me, that was Kapsdan, on 4th October 2003, so he has been riding winners for me for almost 21 years – we have great history together”

Court Of Appeal – salutes judge for first time – Matamata 13th September 2024 – Opie Bosson aboard

Brighthill Farm stallion Eminent, a Group Two winner and dual Group One placed son of peerless racehorse and sire Frankel (Galileo) – currently leading the TRC Global Sires Rankings – was trained by Sir Mark Todd and owned by Sir Peter Vela. From the first crop by Eminent, Court Of Appeal is out of a mare that won three times to 2200 metres, in turn from sensational mare Katy Keen (Zorro’s Lad), a Group Two and Group Three winner that won 10 times to 2500 metres.

Court Of Appeal is the second winner from Katy O’Beel, following Enright (Power), a three time winner to 2100 metres.

Watching the race on Sky Racing from his Cranbourne base, Mark Walker said “She’s so much stronger now, the owners have been patient, and it was a lovely ride of Opie’s, I said to John (Galvin) at the end of her last prep, if we give her a really good spell she’s got the makings of a nice stayer as a four-year-old. Sam (Bergerson) and I will take her along quietly through the early stages of this season, and eventually we’ll get her up in trip.”

Walker suggested Court Of Appeal could return to her home track on Matamata Cup Day (Saturday 5 October), for the Rating 65 1400 metres.

Court Of Appeal was strapped by Rasheed Alam. She is raced by the Fortuna Court Of Appeal Syndicate, an ownership group made up of 46 individuals from all parts of New Zealand

Fortuna has three runners Friday and Saturday

Matamata Friday

COURT OF APPEAL contests the maiden 1400m event – race three at 1.43 pm with Opie Bosson to ride from an outside barrier draw – resumed off a long break nine days ago on this track over 1200m finding it too short and too heavy, however she has taken big improvement from that run, gets another 200m this time and has the services of a great rider. Draw will make it tricky but if she gets luck in the running she is a definite each way chance – TAB says “Senior rider on is the key – can win this for sure” showing $6.50/$2.30 after opening at $12’s

Riccarton – Saturday

VIVACIOUS runs in the R65 1200m event –  race two at 12:53 pm with Wiremu Pinn to ride from an inside barrier – resumed this track two weeks ago, slow away but had the fastest sectionals last 800m. Does tend to be a little tardy out of the barriers, but if she can get away moderately well, she is right in this – TAB says “decent effort fresh up – looks the quinella” – showing $3.80/$1.55

Flemington – Saturday

BELLATRIX STAR contests the (Listed) Cap D’antibes Stakes over 1100m down the Flemington chute from a mid field draw – race three @1.15pm Aus time (3.15pm NZT) with Michael Dee to ride  – a Group 2 winner in NZ as a 2yo, she resumed at Caulfield 17th Aug after 6 months away from the track, beaten 3 lengths off a wide draw in a Group 3 event. A talented sprinter, she meets a very strong field here, but has taken huge improvement from her 1st up run and her training team are expecting a bold performance – set to defy her odds here. TAB says “Not bad fresh and isn’t hopeless at odds”

NZTR announces next step in its Jumps Racing Review
See below the release from NZTR
With the submission date now closed, New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing (NZTR) would like to provide an update on the next steps of the Future of NZ Jumps Racing consultation process. In total, 240 submissions were received with representation across all areas of the racing industry.

“The volume of submissions that we received is testament to the passion of those involved in the racing industry and is further proof of the need for immediate action,” NZTR chief executive Bruce Sharrock said.

While there were differing views, 90 percent of the submissions agreed that the status quo was no longer acceptable.

“In early August we asked for the industry to have their say, and they delivered with well thought out ideas and responses to support the next stage of our process in this important decision,” Sharrock said.

Submissions ranged from owners, trainers, breeders and jockeys and even included racing fans and punters.

“Today, a recommendation panel has been announced that will be responsible in reviewing the current state and putting forward a recommendation to the NZTR Board in October aligned to a decision-making framework,” Sharrock said.

The independent panel is comprised of those with broad industry knowledge and experience. NZTR chief operating officer Darin Balcombe has been appointed Chair, and will be supported by Mark Chitty, Jessica Brosnan, Regan Donnison, Brad Taylor and Tim Mills.

To ensure integrity and robustness of the process Alan Galbraith KC will provide legal overview and endorsement of the decision-making framework.

John comments “as one who presented a strongly worded submission to NZTR supporting the continuation of jump racing, it was pleasing to see that an independent panel has been appointed to consider the issues and make recommendation to the board as to an ongoing plan and I have a good degree of confidence (hopefully not misplaced) that some positive recommendations will come out of this review and be implemented by the full NZTR board”

Racing Journalist “The Optimist” had published a strongly worded article (note this was published ahead of the Independent Panel announcement) – you can read his article below – as always The Optimist pulls no punches!!!

NZTR will harm the thoroughbred industry by banning jump racing

by Brian de Lore
Published 7 September 2024

If New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing CEO Bruce Sharrock goes ahead with his plan to ‘kill off’ hurdle and steeplechase racing in New Zealand, he will inflict immeasurable harm upon the thoroughbred industry. The consultation paper Sharrock released on August 5 to try and soften you up and convince you that jumping needs to go is overwhelmingly slanted against jumping and out of context with the entire thoroughbred industry.

The document is reminiscent of Mark Twain’s saying: “There are three kinds of lies: lies, damn lies, and statistics.” All Sharrock has done with his paper is inappropriately depict a series of graph statistics to give jumping racing a punch below the belt.

Any halfwit could take all the statistics compiled on New Zealand flat racing’s demise over the past 25 years and make a case to close it down. Mark Twain would agree with me on that.

Entain arrived 15 months ago to save New Zealand racing. And it has saved it; stakes went up 25 percent. Had they not partnered with TAB NZ at that time, stakes would have undergone a 20 percent reduction – a differential of 47 percent on what we race for this season.

West Coast after winning his third consecutive Grand National at Riccarton

The stakes are available to grow jumping racing in the winter months, and this past winter’s exciting racing has come in hurdle and steeplechase events, not the flat horses. The two star horses of the winter, The Cossack, winner of the Waikato and Wellington Steeplechases at his past two starts, and West Coast, winner of the Koral and Grand National Steeplechases at his past two

Nothing on the flat came near these four races for exciting racing, especially in the 18 race meetings on the poly tracks at Cambridge, Awapuni and Riccarton in June, July and August, which more often than not threw up poor quality horses in small fields.

The synthetic tracks have their place in the winter months; some trainers like them, and some don’t. But racing’s future survival will not depend on mediocrity – and what those tracks deliver is precisely that. Racing needs the stars to excite racing people – Imperatriz, Orchestral, Crocetti, The Cossack, West Coast, etc.

Three of the greats in NZ jumping history – Eiffel Tower, Teak and Kumai

We all know there’s a problem with jockey numbers, but this has arisen due to an inactive NZTR administration over many years. They have done nothing to address the jockey issue except shrink the number of Highweight races from almost one each race meeting to a handful for the year, thus disincentivising the jumping jockeys from staying in the game or attracting new ones from overseas.

Trainer John Wheeler summed it up succinctly when he wrote in his submission: “Three years ago, at a meeting in Hawkes Bay attended by jumping enthusiasts and two NZTR representatives, we addressed the shortage of riders. We were assured that NZTR would take action, but nothing has been done.”

John Wheeler advertised for jockeys in UK and Ireland

John continued: “Personally, I took the initiative to advertise in the UK and Ireland for jump riders, resulting in interest from Joshua Parker and Bradley Roberts, though he, unfortunately, returned home soon after arriving.”

Daniel Nakhle also got proactive about the shortage of jockeys and can take the credit for bringing in our current champion jockey of 2023-24, Warren Kennedy. Why should it be left to owners and trainers to bring jockeys into the country, which benefits the whole industry?

NZTR has simply become the registrar of thoroughbred births, deaths and marriages with a strong focus on animal welfare, health & safety and rehoming – commendable stuff, but it won’t be enough to save us. Where’s the vision, the creativity, and addressing the issues at the coalface of racing, such as the absence of jockeys?

Over 100 submissions have reputedly been lodged at NZTR this week in response to the Sharrock consultation paper. John Wheeler is as experienced as anyone currently in racing, and it’s worth quoting more of his submission.

John Wheeler: NZTR presented manipulated figures

John said: ”NZTR’s communication on this issue, such as racing statistics, seems designed to undermine jumps racing by presenting manipulated figures that cast the sector in a negative light, without highlighting any positives.

“Despite the lack of support, the jump racing sector has not only survived but thrived. This season has seen strong fields, increased jumpers, more young people involved, and well-attended jump racing events, which is promising for the future. It’s important to remember that many of New Zealand and Australia’s best trainers of staff have come from a jumper or amateur rider background.”

Former journalist and NZTR employee Mary Burgess has submitted a detailed submission. It’s too long to reproduce here, but here’s an excerpt from her post on Facebook this week:

“Last season – 2023-24 – 152 jumpers lined up in 73 jumps races, but just 36 of those horses restricted themselves to jumps races. The other 116 raced 508 times on the flat, an average 4.3 starts each. Add to that their 566 starts in either hurdle or steeplechase races and overall, our “jumpers” averaged 7.06 starts each.

“If you applied the average per horse turnover figure from the 2022-23 NZTR Annual Report (the 2023-24 one not yet available online) then that’s around $17.7m they contribute to the total NZ Turnover.

“How about another stat which might surprise you – 19.83% of our jumpers (23 in total) actually raced on the Awapuni or Cambridge synthetic tracks.

“So, let’s agree that jumpers aren’t just jumpers, and NZTR needs to consider the impact they have across the season.

Mary Burgess: Getting rid of jumpers creates a welfare issue

“To get rid of jumping would be to create a welfare issue with these 152 horses, and the many, many, many more currently going through the process to get their jumping tickets, tipped out of racing and flooding the rehoming market.”

Mary makes an excellent point about the crossover of jumping horses that race on the flat. Getting rid of jumpers will also get rid of people. NZTR needs a plan to retain all its current supporters and find new ones – not downsize and contract the industry.

One of the Sharrock document stats depicts the field size argument. Below the graph, the caption says: “Average field size in jumps races has stayed in a range between 8 and the low 9s (compared to flat size average of 10.54).”

It’s a poor argument when you look at today’s Hastings races. The listed Sir Colin Meads Trophy for three-year-olds is worth $90,000 but has only eight acceptors, and the Group Three Gold Trail Stakes worth $120,000 has only ten acceptors. Since the year 2000, NZTR has reduced the number of races programmed annually from around 3000 to 2300 to keep flat racing field sizes above 10.

The Christchurch Hunt Club with their hounds in the birdcage at Riccarton on Grand National Day.

New Zealand has 28 hunt clubs, of which 18 once staged race days. Today, only two clubs are still involved, the Pakuranga Hunt and the Rotorua-Bay of Plenty Hunt. Can the hunt clubs be reengaged? Historically, hunting, point-to-point racing, hurdling, and steeplechasing had a strong connection and crossover of participants, but over the years, they appear to have drifted apart.

Finally, NZTR has reportedly received over 100 submissions in response to the Sharrock consultation document on jumping. What are the chances of all the board at NZTR reading all the submissions and taking all the arguments into account, or is this process simply an exercise of going through the motions?

Guest Selector – Des Coppins

Des certainly delivered for us in style last week and, amazingly, his two best bets of the day, in winning, brought up a run of six successive “best bets” being successful

Here is what Des has to say this week

Greetings John and the Fortuna team

Irrespective of how your punting went last weekend wasn’t it great to see racing return to almost perfect footing at both Ruakaka and Hastings. On the punting front we did well and thanks to our three horses previewed as genuine chances, Witz End and Customised, both winning and one of the biggest certainties beaten on the day, Who Knows (3rd), the profit margin was respectable.
I doubt if true spring-like conditions will be on offer at New Plymouth on Saturday and in all honesty we should be running on a heavy track while, with rain forecast on Friday in Christchurch, I’m anticipating a track reading in the vicinity of an 8 to the better side of 10 at Riccarton.

These early selections are based on such track surfaces.

My solo pick for New Plymouth is Bozo in race 2.
She’s getting ready for the NZ Cup and a peak performance isn’t far away.
While she’s not 100 percent suited to very heavy stuff she’s shown versatility in track variations all throughout her career.
She’s tough as teak.
And she can certainly stay as evidenced by her brave 4th in last seasons NZ Oaks when she was the second quickest to the line from the top of the straight on a soft track.
I liked her run last time where it had a next up look about it  and at this stage of her preparation the step up in distance to 1800m looks perfect; as does the drop in weight from 55kgs to 53kgs.
Here’s a thought for a small nibble, Bozo at $64 and  $16 for the Futures market on the NZ Cup.!

At Riccarton I feel the Te Akau team has the fire power to land three, maybe four winners. Opie, too, will be to the fore but it’ll be one of the “secondary” jockeys to the stable, Wiremu Pinn, who I consider has a winning chance with Alminette in the last race. Both her runs this term on the synthetic have been solid but she’s not a one trick pony when it comes to racing surfaces. She likes the grass just as much and we shouldn’t forget that she’s been placed twice in black type company at Riccarton on the grass.
She will get back but watch her unwind as she often does and the best part of her racing is always over the latter part of the race.
For my third suggested bet let’s be greedy by taking a 3 horse multi, Age of Discovery, race one ( trials form, brilliant); When Stars Align, race two ( definite improver after first up run) and Retail Therapy, race four ( sensational final sectionals last time).

At the odds of all 3 winning at better than 12 to one a “tenner” spent just might work in our favour.
Fingers crossed!

Good punting folks!

Des Coppins 2024 Melbourne Cup Tour still has a few spots available but bookings close today at Noon

===================================================================================
Fortuna has no runners over the weekend – a most unusual occurrence, however yesterday there were quite a few Fortuna clients up and out of the chairs mid afternoon – these being the members of the Our Paramour syndicate – she is a 3yo Filly by Contributor who was having her very first race day outing at Cranbourne in Victoria – ridden by Blake Shinn, she was well favoured in the betting and ran a very strong race, just couldn’t get clear however as they turned for home, got held up and finished up getting beaten into third place by  a head – “A certainly beaten” was Mark Walker’s post race observation.

Our Paramour was a $75,000 purchase at the 2023 New Zealand Bloodstock Ready to Run  sale by David Ellis and Fortuna Racing – she showed a lot of promise in the autumn with two trials including a winning one at Taupo and had been identified by Mark Walker as a staying type Filly who potentially could contest the VRC Oaks at Flemington in November, hence why she has travelled to Australia to make her race day debut – certainly one to watch out for her next start

Guest Selector – Des Coppins

I know quite a few of our readers backed Des Riccartons selections for us last week, Kabugee and The Victress and for his regular subscribers, both Best Bets on Saturday  (To Bravery Born and The Victress) came in and also his midweek best bet at Matamata, Lux Libertas, saluted the judge

Here is what Des has to say this week

Greetings John and the Fortuna team

We’ve had a good week with our best bets and it was pleasing to see two from the three handed out last week in the column, Kabugee and The Victress, both winning at respectable prices. The other horse mentioned Saint Bathans took up more space in the judicial report than any other runner. He’ll keep.

Before entering some “horses to follow” for this weekend and beyond may I take the liberty of allowing you to have  a last look at our well respected Melbourne Cup tour; the reason being it closes off at noon today.  We have a good number going and some Fortuna readers have enquired.

How good is it to  see great racing on a decent surface for the return of group one racing at Hastings this Saturday?

Three I’ll be having something on are:

Who Knows, race 4, Hastings

She didn’t  like the ground last time and I could see her changing stride in the running but she dug deep like the good horse she is(or is going to be!)
That third followed a convincing win on this track on a heavy 8 but I’m convinced she will be even more effective on top of the ground on Saturday with regular rider Lily Sutherland up.
For the record Who Knows’s grand dam, Cinder Bella, was a star at this carnival in the year 2000 and 2001!

Witz End, race 10

Time was always going to be this bloke’s friend.
He’s had 4 starts in NZ for 2 wins and two seconds and the failed trip to Sydney on a wet day at Randwick would’ve been a learning curve.
Ever since he first stepped on a race track he had real presence which began at Hastings in December last year.
From a handy barrier I’d expect Witz End to dominate from the front or trail the leader and, if the recent trial is anything to go on, pounce and win!

Ruakaka race 3 – I’ll be having a go on both Customised and First Dance.

The former had a jump out at Ellerslie recently and wasn’t extended to run second while First Dance’s recent trial had a sense of “back me first up” on the way it handled the task.
Customised has race experience and on debut at Eagle Farm he ran 3rd to the pin up youngster, Storm Boy at group 3 level while expectations with First Dance, apart from the trial, rest on a recent nomination for the group one Guineas at Riccarton. A quinella isn’t a silly idea.

Finally I was pleased to assist 33 Fortuna readers with free tips for the past 7 days.
If you are still keen it’s subscription territory going forward!

LEADERBOARD to spell in Victoria

Following his gallant second in the $400,000 Grand National Steeples at Ballarat last Sunday, Leaderboard will now go to the paddock and spell before commencing a new campaign for the 2025 jumping season in Victoria – originally the plan for him was to bring him back to New Zealand to spell, but to contest the Great Northern Steeples at Te Rapa on 15th of September before going to the paddock.  John comments as follows “After Leaderboard’s run at Ballarat on Sunday Mark Walker and I reviewed his run, took comment from Aaron Kuru as well and while he ran gallantly, it was clear that he was out on his feet over the last 400m and so, given that he would need to run a further 1900m in the Great Northern at Te Rapa with just a three week gap that included a trip to New Zealand, we decided that all of that was a bridge too far and that “Tiger” should go to the paddock for a well-deserved rest.” After a campaign where he started seven times in Victoria over jumping events collecting two wins (both at Warrnambool), plus running 2nd in the Australian Hurdles, 3rd in the Thackerey Steeples, 3rd in the Grand National Hurdles and second in the Grand National Steeples, fashioning a very consistent record in his first full season over the jumps, never finishing back further than 3rd while competing against the very best that Victoria had on offer

Trainer, Mark Walker says “Leaderboard is a true warrior in every sense of the term – he just loves training and racing, has always got his head in the feedbin and is the perfect gentleman around the stable. He is a genuine pleasure to train – we gave him a full going over by our stable vet on Monday after his big race the day before – this examination included x-rays and ultrasound and, remarkably for a 10 year-old, he is in great physical condition with no issues. Aaron Kuru, who is a great judge, predicts he will be even better in the 2025 jumping season in Victoria”

Leaderboard will be assessed by Mark and assistant trainer Ben Gleeson after he has had 6 to 8 weeks in the paddock and a decision made at that time about when he will return to training, but his initial target for the new jumping season in Victoria will be the Warrnambool carnival late April/early May where there are potentially two suitable races for him, the Brierly Steeples over 3450m on 29th of April or the Grand National Steeples over 5500m on the 1st of May

Te Akau’s Cranbourne expansion taking shape

Buoyed from their significant success in their first season of operation Te Akau racing is moving ahead at full speed with its construction of 40 more boxes.  Mark Walker has been criss crossing the Tasman  between the Matamata and Cranbourne bases, while assistant trainer at Cranbourne, Ben Gleeson, is a busy man, not only looking after the day to day duties associated with the Te Akau stable runners, but also overseeing the construction. Click HERE to see a video overview of the new developments with voiceover from Mark – this giving a good perspective of the expansion process

Guest Selector – Des CoppinsAfter making his “special offer” last week Des ran into some technical issues with his email with potentially many parties unable to contact him to take advantage of that offer, so he has extended the offer for this week as well  -see details below

Here is what Des has to say this week

Greetings John and the Fortuna team

Firstly congratulations John on Leaderboard’s brave second to The Good Fight in the Grand National last Sunday. I thought he had it when he mastered the top weight nearing the top of the straight but a very satisfying placing nonetheless for a horse who, like the winner, Good Fight, was an accomplished flat performer before switching to jumps. He really does enjoy his jumping and I thought he  measured each fence evenly. This result with these two old boys certainly gave further weight to the defence that jumps racing should always hold a special place both here and in Australia.

Before releasing my horses to follow for this weekend and beyond for better spring racing I have a brief apology to make.

I offered free selections last week on Foxbridge Plate Day for readers of the Friday Flash but disaster struck! My email went down on Friday and this tech dinosaur couldn’t reboot it. Somone a lot younger than moi solved the problem in due course. It was frustrating, to say the least. I had a back up with iCloud, thankfully, for my regular clients but of course those of you who emailed me on the normal “xtra” email , through no fault of your own, weren’t able to make contact.

As a consolation all this week I’ve passed on my tips ex gratis to all who missed Saturday’s analysis and the bonus will continue for anyone else who wishes to test the waters for this Saturday only, the last race day of the month.
Simply email me dcoppins@xtra.co.nz and Saturday’s Wanganui and Riccarton tips including the best and value bets at both meetings will follow before 9am. (Ps deadline for the free tips 8am Saturday)

On to this weekend:
Like last week we see some promising gallopers with bigger and better targets in front of them in the weeks and months ahead.

Saint Bathans, race 4 Wanganui

He’s one who comes to hand quickly and he enjoys a decent moisture read in the track.
Only once in 4 starts, has he not won on a heavy track!
I liked both his two trials this term, especially the one at Te Rapa where he ran 5th and the four horses who finished front of him all ran within 2.6 lengths of Bonny Lass in the Foxbridge Plate 7 days ago.
Whatever he does on Saturday he will improve on it  and as he holds important nominations in two of the upcoming Hastings Triple Crown races I  feel he will be  pretty close to peak fitness on Saturday and race accordingly as long as the track isn’t Trentham -July-like!!

Kabugee, race 9 Riccarton

This bloke has had his share of bad luck but he gets every chance to gain a well deserved break through in the last at Riccarton.
He’s back in class.
The track conditions shouldn’t bother him

The Victress, race 4 Riccarton

She looked promising last season and she’s ready to resume.
If she can cope with the track she will go close but in any case she’s definitely one to follow as well.
Wiremu Pinn rode her in the Te Rapa trial and she galloped kindly as she tucked in neatly behind the first few while hitting the line to confirm she’s capable of fronting up on Saturday, as long as Riccarton also  isn’t bottomless.
Good punting folks.

 OTHER NEWS

LEADERBOARD seeks Jumping Glory in the A$400k Grand National Steeples at Ballarat Sunday 25th September

The Fortuna syndicated/ Mark Walker trained veteran 10-year-old Galloper Leaderboard (Street Cry – Flower Fairy), seeks to add another significant scalp to his CV when he contests the time honoured Grand National Steeplechase over 4500 m at Ballarat this coming Sunday. Leaderboard, the winner of the Wellington Cup in 2023 and the NZ St Leger in 2022, has fashioned an exemplary record across the Tasman in his first full season of jumps racing, with six starts over the fences producing two wins (one hurdles, one steeples), two seconds and two thirds, racing on most occasions in the very best of company, finishing 2nd in the Australian Hurdles at Sandown in June and three weeks ago finishing 3rd in the Grand National Hurdles at the same venue. Now a very stern challenge presents itself for Leaderboard this coming Sunday as he takes on the very best jumpers in Australia, including the mighty Stern Idol, the winner of 10 of his 19 races over the jumps.

Trainer Mark Walker, who has been at the Te Akau Racing Cranbourne base this week overseeing Leaderboard’s preparation, has no doubts that his charge is well and truly ready for the task. He saysI’ve just watched Leaderboard come back in from working over a mile this morning(Thursday). Everything has gone right this preparation, his work has been fantastic, he is in tiptop physical condition, trotting out 100% sound, eating his head off, he has Victoria’s champion jumps jockey, Aaron Kuru, aboard, he gets to race off the minimum, so we are very pleased – and it looks like he is going to get track conditions on Sunday to suit – we can’t wait

Fortuna Director, John Galvin, who will be attending Ballarat this Sunday along with Jessica Galvin and six syndicate Members is fulsome in his praise of what Leaderboard has achieved this season. “I’ve had the good fortune to attend four of Leaderboard’s races in Victoria this season and the jumping scene over there is amazing to experience firsthand. There are so many good quality jumpers, some really dedicated trainers and a great ownership base that really love their jumping events and so it’s been a privilege to not only experience that, but also to witness Leaderboard competing with distinction – it certainly won’t be easy on Sunday but Mark Walker, with great assistance from Assistant Trainer Ben Gleeson, has conducted a magnificent preparation on our horse and we are expecting him to run extremely well

Leaderboard is booked to fly home to New Zealand on 28th of August in order to have a good late spring/early summer spell at Te Akau Stud, but along the way, subject to him coming through Sunday’s race in good order, he will look to contest the Great Northern Steeple at Te Rapa on Sunday 15th of September

=================================================
Guest Selector – Des CoppinsHere is what Des has to say this week – and check out his “special offer” for Fortuna clients highlighted in yellow

Greetings John and the Fortuna team
Even the winterless northern Ruakaka couldn’t escape the brutal front that brought its share of wind and rain at the tail end of last week but I was happy with the efforts of both Nereus and The Odyssey who I handed out 7 days ago. They are both black bookers for certain and as soon as they strike a genuine spring like track you can start backing them both with a good deal of confidence. The other horse I mentioned last week When Stars Align was saved for Taupo midweek and in running third it, too, is a contender for honours as soon as the tracks begin to dry.

I was hoping for a spring surface at Te Rapa for a decent mix of jumps and flat racing at the highest level. However, while the  weather radar is telling us to expect very little rain between now and Friday evening a few on and off showers in the early part of Saturday morning is expected  for Foxbridge Plate Day. Bearing this in mind I’ll be including the likes of Mustang Valley and Wewillrock in my combinations for the time honoured flat race.

Mustang Valley was less than two lengths from the winner,  Dragon Leap, in the race last year when held up briefly at a crucial part of the race at the top of the straight. Overall she has a very satisfying record fresh on 3 of her previous campaigns. I thought her trial the other day at Te Rapa was as good as any.

I’m also a fan of on pace runner Wewillrock, who also ran in the Foxbridge Plate last year. He jumped from barrier 13 in the event and copped a check at the start yet managed to finish less than 3.5 lengths from the winner. He’s won 7 times in just 21 starts and has never been further back than second in 6 starts on a heavy track. He loves it here with 3 wins alongside his name and this time has an inside draw.

The Foxbridge Plate is always a great race in its own right but it also serves as a good pointer to the first leg of the Hastings Triple Crown in a fortnight. Last year Dragon Leap and Skew Wiff fought out the finish of both races on soft 7 and 5 respectively. Pay close attention to the outcome on Saturday and more importantly keep an eye on track conditions at both venues because if they are anywhere as close as they were underfoot 12 months ago the form will surely stack up.

Ps the email tipping service is available as a one-off FREE this weekend only exclusively to Fortuna readers. Simply email me before 8am Saturday and  you’ll have the race by race tips for both Te Rapa and Riccarton meetings on Saturday  as well as the best bets and value bets with brief but in depth comment before 9am.

Good punting and good luck with the Fortuna runners this weekend especially the versatile Leaderboard in the Grand National on Sunday.

 OTHER NEWS

BELLATRIX STAR will contest the Group 3 Quezette Stakes for 3yo Fillies over 1100m at Caulfield Saturday 17th August at her Australian debut

Te Akau Australia assistant trainer Ben Gleeson was happy to receive a vote of confidence from in-demand jockey Michael Dee ahead of three-year-old-filly Bellatrix Star‘s (Star Witness) Australian debut at Caulfield on Saturday in the Gr.3 Quezette Stakes (1100m). Dee has ridden the Mark Walker and Sam Bergerson-trained filly in a jumpout and at trackwork at Cranbourne on Tuesday and he has given the stable’s Melbourne-based manager Gleeson a positive assessment.

“He’s been very pleased with her and wants to stick with her, which says a lot,” Gleeson said. The Te Akau Racing filly had five starts in New Zealand as a two-year-old for two wins, including the Gr.2 Eclipse Stakes over her highly rated stablemate Move To Strike at Pukekohe and subsequent Karaka Millions winner, Velocious.

At her most recent start she finished fourth in New Zealand’s biggest two-year-old race, the Karaka Millions, behind Velocious. “She’s a lovely filly and she brings arguably the top New Zealand two-year-old form being around Velocious and Move To Strike,” he said. “She ran an unlucky fourth in the Karaka Millions and before that she defeated the winner. She’s got great form and it will be interesting to see how that stacks up here.”

Gleeson said Bellatrix Star had been with him at Cranbourne for close to a month since coming over from New Zealand. “She’s had plenty of time to settle in and has done really well. She had one jumpout in New Zealand and then the one jumpout here. The bulk of her work was done with Mark and Sam,” he said.

Gleeson said early in Bellatrix Star’s career she tended to over-race, but she has learnt to settle better. “She’s settling now. Touch wood she does that on Saturday and if she does, it could open the door for 1400m,” he said.

Bellatrix Star is raced by Fortuna Racing, and was purchased by David Ellis CNZM and Fortuna Racing at the 2023 NZ Bloodstock Karaka Sale for NZ$80,000

John Galvin will be present at Caulfield along with 13 Syndicate Members and Guests

Aaron Kuru wins the Tommy Corrigan Medal, Victoria Racing’s Award for its Champion Jumps Jockey – repeating his 2023 acheivement

Aaron Kuru retained the Tommy Corrigan Medal he won for the first-time last year, after he was again judged to be Victoria’s leading jumps jockey across the 2023-24 racing season. Kuru, whose list of achievements included a third straight success in the Ecycle Solutions Two Rivers Steeplechase (3800m) in partnership with Elvison, polled 15 votes to finish five ahead of his nearest challenger, Will Gordon. Aaron combined with Fortuna’s Leaderboard plus the Te Akau syndicated jumpers, Prismatic and The Mighty Spar, to win six races and several other placings for Trainer Mark Walker

Talking of Mark Walker, he was nominated for the Most Outstanding Training Performance at the Victorian Racing Awards evening, courtesy of his great achievements with Imperatriz, with this award going in the end to Anthony/Sam Freedman for their Caulfield Cup/Melbourne Cup double hero, Without A Fight

Guest Selector – Des Coppins

Gee, Des has been having a great run of success in recent weeks with his full tipping service, with a host of winners tipped out, some at pretty good odds also and I have had some nice feedback from Fortuna clients who are subscribers to his punting service – Des can be contacted @ dcoppins@xtra.co.nz if you would like to get detail on how to subscribe

Here is what Des has to say this week

Hi John and the Fortuna Team

After watching Berry the Cash and West Coast carry on their winning way in the Nationals last week it’s hard not to realise that jumps racing is a captivating time honoured pursuit that forms a vital part of NZ racing’s rich heritage. We should never forget this in light of what both equine heroes last Saturday at Riccarton gave us and what The Cossack did at Trentham a month earlier on the Figure 8.

While on and off course punters may often shy away from betting regularly on decent  jumps races and are more likely to have a dabble on the flat races the awareness these jumps stars bring to the race day may well motivate punters to bet even more on the undercard. A bit of reverse psychology you might say.

In reality here’s a good example that may back up that theory. A coach load of punters came to Trentham at the recent winter meeting to watch The Cossack race. They are slightly less than regular punters who enjoy a day out at Trentham around carnival time. They played the exotics on both races but were more open and betting freely with the undercard. Two of the group told me they probably wouldn’t have bothered with the day if the jumps racing – Wellington Hurdles/ Wellington Steeples  and especially The Cossack  wasn’t  there!

Let’s get to this Saturday.

There are some nice horses resuming at Ruakaka on Saturday where the track reading should be in the soft 5-6 range but the weather looks “iffy” at New Plymouth and it’ll be heavy  I’d imagine if the weather forecasters are close to the mark.
I’ll give you three horses at Ruakaka to have a slight nibble on but understand that while all three are capable of paying a dividend on Saturday they’ll reward you in due course.
In race 6 I liked the way When Stars Align trialled at Te Rapa.
He hit the front without too much stress and held his ground to the line to finish second to Karaka Millions star, Velocious.
He looked the part last season and time was always going to be his friend.
He’s an early Guineas type.

Also keep a close watch on The Odyssey and Nereus in race 5.
Nereus was in hot form over the last 12 months, especially in the summer. He won 4 times in 6 starts and coincidentally ran second to The Odyssey in the inaugural $350,000 Remutaka Classic  at Trentham over the Cup carnival.
Connections of both will be looking for early form and both hold a nomination for the Livamol Classic on October 12.
Good punting!
